Crash course from SW Motech

Low speed and static tumbles are not only embarrassing, they can be very costly; damaged engine casings and bodywork can disrupt or even halt journeys completely, and can be expensive to repair or replace. More commonplace during winter months, when wet leaves, frost and ice can cause riders to lose footing and tyres to lose traction, it is advisable for any rider to take precautions by fitting crash bars.
Constructed from heavy-duty steel, SW-Motech Crash Bars form a protective barrier around the areas liable to damage caused by low speed falls, and can help protect casings and fairings during impacts with other vehicles and in slides and falls at higher speeds.
Although tough, they’re lightweight and unobtrusive, and each set is tailor made to fit the relevant machine; so they add minimal width. In addition, Crash Bar and components are sandblasted and powder coated to help prevent corrosion and blend with the machine’s styling. As well as providing protection, Crash bars are also useful for mounting accessories such as auxiliary fog lamps; ideal for extra safety during the winter riding season.
SW-Motech kits normally require no modifications or cutting of bodywork to fit, and come complete with all the required mounting materials and instructions. New models covered for this winter include the Ducati 1200 Multistrada (£148.06 including VAT), Honda CBF1000 (£128.31), Kawasaki Z1000 (£138.19), Triumph Street Triple (£138.19) and Yamaha Super Tenere 1200 (£157.93). HAND ARMOUR FOR WINTER - KNOX ZERO WITH OUTDRY

Knox Hand Armour completely redefined the way we think about motorcycle gloves when it was launched in 2009. Now Knox will be the first manufacturer to produce a waterproof glove using innovative OutDry® technology. Hand Armour for winter use, the Zero offers reliable waterproofing and temperature control alongside patented scaphoid protection and BOA fastening. Traditionally motorcycle gloves are made waterproof by inserting a membrane between the outer shell and inner lining (below right). Although this system is reasonably efficient for keeping hands dry, it leaves a gap between the shell and the waterproof barrier, where water can stagnate and create an unpleasant wet, cold sensation. That's why so many winter gloves become heavy and water-logged in rainy conditions and can take days to dry out. The OutDry® system is based on a patented lamination process: the waterproof and breathable membrane is bonded directly to the external glove's shell by the action of pressure and temperature, creating a unique body which seals the stitching and any other potential water entry point (below left)

This lamination process blocks the wind on the glove's outer surface, reducing the effect of wind chill and, since there is no gap for air between the shell and the membrane, cold air cannot circulate. This allows a layer of warm air to develop, dramatically reducing the risk of condensation from excessive perspiration, maintaining stable hand temperature.
Featuring the dialled-in Boa Lacing System used across the entire Knox Hand Armour range, which uses a dial to draw ‘side pods' over the wrist for multi-adjustable closure, the wearer can get hands in and out of the ZERO quickly and easily, even operating the Boa dial with a gloved hand. Boa's micro-adjustment helps to eliminate tight spots and restriction to blood flow, which can contribute to cold hands and fingers, and allows proper positioning of the ZERO's cuffs over thick winter riding jackets, helping to keep out wind and rain.
With drum-dyed aniline leather on the fingers and back of the hand, and a tough yet supple goat leather and Amara Grip Pad with silicon for increased feel and grip on the controls, the Zero uses top grade materials.
Protection is also important in a winter glove, as wet and icy conditions can increase the risk of accident, so the ZERO features Knox's Low Profile Scaphoid Protection System with abrasion resistant Shoeller Keprotec reinforcement at the palm.
Due in UK showrooms early in 2011, the Zero is expected to retail for around £130.  For further information contact Knox on 01900 825825 or visit www.knox-lab.com

Skidmarx race kit for Fireblade 2008-10

Skidmarx have enjoyed considerable race success with Honda this year - the British company's racing screens were fitted to five of the winning Honda machines in the Isle of Man TT races and a further three winners in the Ulster Grand Prix as well. Honda's second generation Fireblade has proved a popular track day tool for many riders and now Skidmarx offer not only screens, but also a full set of race bodywork for models from 2008-2010.

Produced from lightweight 450gm CSM material that is backed up with woven cloth, the fairing and single seat unit are pre-drilled to fit onto existing mounting points and the kit is supplied with quick-release Dzus fasteners. Both the fairing and seat unit are manufactured in the UK and are designed to directly replace the original body parts. Unlike the road fairing, the race version has no headlight aperture or indicator mounting points, and instead has an enclosed belly pan with a catch tray to comply with ACU rules. Skidmarx produce their race bodywork in plain white, ready to be painted in team colours; the Race Fairing sells for £260- and the single seat unit (with integrated undertray) costs £110- (including VAT).

Matching race screens are manufactured from 2mm acrylic to offer enhanced optical clarity compared to the road versions (i.e. it's easier to see through them) and are lighter too. Standard race screens retail for £39.95 and double bubble versions cost £49.95.

Other accessories for the latest 'Blade include a replacement GRP cover for the dummy fuel tank, priced at £65 and a front guard and hugger, both made from ultra light carbon fibre. The front guard retails at £99.95 and the hugger sells for £129.95, complete with tailored fitting kit.
